CHECK LIST FOR BUYING WOOD FURNITURE

All woods used for making furniture fall into two categories -- hardwoods and softwoods, but the designation doesn't really have anything to do with how hard or how soft the wood is. "Hardwood" identifies the trees that lose their leaves seasonally and "softwood" refers to those that keep their foliage all year.

Among hardwoods frequently used in making furniture are ash, cherry, maple, oak, pecan, teak, rosewood, walnut, mahogany and poplar. In the softwood category are cedar, cypress, fir, pine and redwood.

CONSTUCTION TECHNIQUES

Several different woods may be used in the same piece of furniture. For example, the term solid cherry or solid mahogany means that all exposed parts of the piece are made of solid wood. The frame or other parts not visible to the eye might be of another wood such as gum or poplar.

Generally, more expensive furniture usually is made of fine hardwoods such as maple, cherry or oak or of "selected" softwoods such as pine. Medium-priced furniture may have a combination of different woods on exposed surfaces.

Because trees don't grow in the shapes and sizes required for making furniture, pieces of wood are bonded together in different ways to achieve the necessary sizes and shapes.

Four types of bonding are often used:

1. Wide boards are often cut into long narrower planks and bonded back together. In solid wood furniture, strips are carefully glued together to form the tops, sides and door panels. The interior may be of another wood.

2. Shaping is achieved by gluing blocks of wood together. These blocks can be machined for a deep carved pattern or turned and shaped into a leg, pedestal or post.

3. Combination wood panels are made by mixing wood particles, chips or flakes with resins and binding agents. These sheets are formed under extreme heat and tremendous pressure making them exceptionally strong, stable and resistant to warping. Called chipboard, particleboard, fiberboard or engineered wood, this material is frequently used on the backs of cabinets and doors or as cores for tops and panels.

4. Ply construction is achieved by adding layers, placed at cross grain, to a solid wood or particleboard core. Adhesives are placed on each layer and this "sandwich" is permanently bonded under high pressure. Modern glues and manufacturing techniques have made ply construction very strong and resistant to warping.

VENEERING. . .an ancient art.

Much of the most expensive furniture produced today owes its exceptional beauty to veneers. Veneering is centuries old. The Egyptians used it and Sir Thomas Chippendale was a masterful practitioner of the art. His designs from the 1700s attest to the beauty and lasting quality of fine veneers. In Chippendale's time, veneering was so costly that few could afford it. But that isn't the case today.

Veneer construction is the application of this layers of highly decorative woods on top of solid cores, plywood, particle board or medium-density fiberboard. Veneering allows great flexibility, making it possible to match grain patterns or use inlays to create designs that nature can't produce in the solid wood. Today, wood furniture in all price ranges is made of veneer construction which allows maximum use of beautiful, distinctive grain patterns and rare woods at affordable prices.

ENGRAVING AND PRINTING. . .a new technique

Modern technology has produced a less expensive method of achieving the look of wood veneers. Manufacturers can simulate a natural wood grain by printing or engraving a pattern on surfaces such as density fiberboard. This beautiful furniture is easier to produce and available at a lower price than genuine wood veneers. It's attractive and durable but usually doesn't provide the same benefits as the real thing. However, printing and engraving offers you exceptional looks on a limited budget.

FINISHES. . .the final touch of beauty

An appropriate finish adds the final touch of beauty to wood furniture. A finish which provides uniform color and adds a degree of protection generally requires the application of several coats of oil, wax, lacquer or paint to the surface.

Clean finishes allow the markings and grain variations of naturally beautiful woods to show through. Tinted or opaque finishes change the color of the wood and can make two different woods appear to be the same. Finishes can vary the look of a piece, making it appear smooth and sophistcated or rough hewn or rustic.

Distressing is a technique for aging new furniture and heightening its rustic appeal. The wood is beaten or battered before the finish is applied. Distressed finishes tend to hide finger marks and scratches and can be an excellent choice for rooms where there is a lot of activity.

Painted finishes are another popular way of adding the final touch of beauty. Painted pieces can be more expensive than those with natural finishes because paint tends to point up flaws so extra care must be taken at the factory to make sure that imperfections are removed from the wood.

Imported furniture and some contemporary designs may have other finishes. Your sales person or designer will be glad to explain the variations and fill you in on how to extend the life of your new wood furniture by pampering it with the right care.

Anybody have any experience buying goods in South East Asia and having
them shipped home? I am mainly refering to larger things such as
furniture etc that cannot be carried with luggage.
I am particularly interested in wood products
Are the companies trustworthy, does it take a long time by boat, what
are the procedures involved for items to clear customs?
Any info would be helpful.

they are trustworthy mostly, but it is very expensive and a 1/4 of a
container is about $2500. i think...

You need to sort the last question first and that is the import
regulations in your home country, for example taking wooden products
into Australia is difficult, not so much from a 'customs/tax' pint but
moreover from a health issue, Australia is very concerned about
insects inside wood etc, you had better check your home county customs
first. Then if you get that sorted I would suggest you use a
shipping/freight company that has a presence in your home country, i.e
offices at both ends as opposed to using a freight agent who passes
p/work onto another agent.

First do a LOT of shopping at home to see prices. It is relatively
easy to find Asian style furniture in the US these days, check the
internet or the yellow pages. These places buy and ship in bulk and
get very good prices. If you do ship, some things to consider:

1. If you live in a place with seasons, i.e., winter, your wood
furniture will most likely crack over time, and cracks could be major.
Most of Asia is quite humid and the wood absorbs a lot of water. This
is another reason to buy at home, as the pieces will have had some
time to adjust and badly cracked pieces either won't be for sale, or
you can ask for a guarantee/return if the piece cracks within the
first 12 months.. Some places in Asia will tell you they can "treat"
the wood in a special room for a few weeks; I have not yet seen that
this works well, esp if you live in a place that has low humidity all
year long.

2. Figure paying the same as the purchase cost of the item to ship it.
Make sure you arrange for point to point shipping, which means it will
be delivered to your home and not to the nearest dock. Bargain quite
hard on the purchase price and tell them that as you have to ship it,
your purchase price has to be lower.

3. Let the store you buy from arrange the shipping and pay by credit
card; that way the store has an investment in making sure the item
arrives. Arranging commercial shipping by yourself is not easy and is
generally more expense, and I have had some bad experiences with it
(as opposed to having the store ship, where things turned up every
time).

4. You will mostly likely have to pay customs duty on it when it
arrives in the US (I assume you live there). There is an exemption for
some handicraft items. The Customs Service website may give info take
a look at customs.ustreas.gov; otherwise the shipper receiving the
item in the US will assess the customs duty and you will pay it as a
condition to having the item delivered to you.

5. Shipping to the US by boat takes between 3-6 weeks depending on
where you buy it and where you need it delivered.

My best friend, who goes to Bali often, shipped lots of furniture
pieces from Bali, about 5 years ago, and it didn't cost that much.I
don't remember the exact cost, although I calculated out her invoice,
but it was quite reasonable. Just check your items as soon as you get
them because a friend of mine who works at the harbor in San Pedro,Ca
told me that water can get into the containers and then wooden items
can be ruined. My best friend didn't have such a problem with water,
but she did have a damaged item. The damage could have been prevented
had the people who packed the items, in Bali, taken the door off of
her wood and stone-carved china cabinet and packed it separately. But,
they didn't and the stone work on the front of the wooden door cracked
and she also ended up with a broken hinge, due to the weight of the
door. If you ship cabinets or dressers then stuff the drawers with
other small items bought. My best friend saved a lot of money having
bought her furniture in Bali. The other pieces she bought were
undamaged. I remember the three-seater wooden and stone-carved bench
that she bought cost her $30.(I calculated out her invoices to
dollars)and the same bench in L.A. was selling for $395.00....I have a
friend who works for the company that carried the same bench here in
L.A. area. I'm quite acquainted with the prices of Indonesian
furniture since I know most of the stores in L.A. county and had an
Indonesian friend who owned a big Indonesian furniture store in Orange
County. My house is furnished with the items. Happy Travels!

Thanks for the great advice- very detailed!
I live in Canada and can ship some within my duty free limit as
unaccompanied goods.
We have concerns re wood products and so they must be fumigated and checked.
What I am interested in actually are carved wood doors for a new
house. Humidity and cracking is an issue here for sure.
We shall see and I will let all know of the experience!

The Redmond, Wash.-based start-up specializes in building high-end PCs into handcrafted furniture, everything from simple Amish and Shaker cabinets to ornate Louis XV creations.

"The trend is covering up and building in technology," said John Wojewidka, a veteran of the custom PC business who started Truvia in response to growing demand for PCs that didn't look like PCs. "People don't want the technology itself to be the centerpiece of their living environment."

After several years of working with furniture makers and wood carvers on one-off projects, Wojewidka decided there was a need for a systematic approach to custom-made desks that carefully conceal a high-end PC. The movement has attracted interest from companies such as Microsoft that are looking to popularize PCs as living room objects.

Truvia is now working on several prototype designs, as well as forging relations with the interior designers and architects Wojewidka expects will account for the majority of his business. He expects the typical client to be a wealthy family with a new or remodeled home where a clunky traditional PC would mess up the look of the den or living room.

Wojewidka predicts that the Truvia approach will hold particular appeal for design-savvy women. "We've got an opportunity to market to well-heeled female buyers, who've never been addressed in the PC market," he said. "They'll buy something like an iMac and put it inside a handmade Amish cabinet. When they're not working on it, they don't want to see it."

The innards of Truvia models will come from VoodooPC, one of a growing number of PC makers specializing in high-powered machines for game players. Truvia will carefully integrate the Voodoo hardware into a desk or another other object crafted by one of a handful of custom woodworking partners. Designs can resemble anything from a Louis XV armoire to a modernist glass-and-steel cabinet.

"We can design anything anyone could possible want," Wojewidka said. "My partners on the furniture side include people who do modern stuff and others who do very traditional furniture."

One partner's claim to fame, he noted, is replicating museum pieces. "You can have a PC that looks like a piece from the Louvre."

Integrating a PC into a fine piece of furniture means more than drilling a few holes for USB and power cables. Truvia's designs typically hide the screen when the PC isn't in use, and placement of the PC in the furniture poses a number of engineering challenges.

"We've got a lot of concerns about heat management," Wojewidka said. "We've worked a lot on ventilation. We don't want anyone's house to burn down."

Truvia PCs also have to be designed for a life cycle that's much different from the two-year replacement cycle typical of the PC business. "If someone's paying $40,000 for a piece of furniture, they're not going to give it up in two years," Wojewidka said. "Everything has to be designed for upgrading."

If your wooden piece is one of history or value, and not intended for every day use, you should take steps to ensure its protection. When placing flowerpots, knick-knacks and picture frames on wood, make sure the surface is protected. You can do this by placing felt on the bottom of the object or placing the object on a protective covering such as a table runner or doily. If you'll be putting a beverage down on wood furniture, use a coaster in order to avoid watermarks or heat damage. Every day wood pieces such as kitchen tables don't require quite as much caution, but it's good to use place mats to protect the wood and make it last longer. Be sure to dust your wood furniture at least once a week to keep dust particles from building up. It's best to use only a slightly damp cloth for this task as common waxes, sprays and polishes can leave a buildup on the surface of the piece. Spray a soft cloth with the product and apply to the wood that way. If you have one of those homes that get very dry in the winter, you may want to use a humidifier to keep your furniture from getting too dry. Dry heat can cause your piece to crack. Avoid direct sunlight as well as this can cause discoloration. In order to avoid extreme temperatures, keep your wooden furniture away from heating or air conditioning vents and fireplaces. When treating wood for a stain or scratch, it would be a good idea to test the treatment method first on a hidden area of the table. The last thing you want is to cause more visible damage. If you happen to spill a beverage on your wood furniture, or if you get one of those unsightly water rings that come from placing a glass down unprotected, you have several options for treating the piece. First, wipe up the liquid immediately. If a stain or watermark has been left behind, try rubbing the wood with some white, non-gel toothpaste and wipe with a clean cloth. If you don't happen to have any of this type of toothpaste available, you can also follow the same steps using mayonnaise or salad oil. Something else to try is to cover the area with a bath towel and apply a warm iron. If you spill liquid on paper, and the paper sticks to your wood furniture, this also comes up easily. Rub the area with salad oil or mayonnaise and it should be easy to remove. Nicks and scratches are easy to repair, or at least hide. If you mar cherry wood, try applying iodine to the spot using a cotton swab. If the wood is dark, you can use a matching crayon. A waxy paste shoe polish works for this task as well. For any other repairs, you might want to call in a professional. Unless you're well versed in wood restoration, it's best to leave this to someone with experience. The way you furnish your living room depends not only upon your taste but also on the way the space is used. Do you use your living room every day? For dining? Working? During the day? Do children use it? Is there an exterior door that opens into it? Do you have a television, sound system, or even a telephone there? Answers to these questions will help set parameters for furnishings, flooring, and electrical support.

Translucent windows, cinderblock walls, and parquet floor gives a room a textured shell that would fight complicated furnishings. But sleek, simple shapes in a limited palette decorate it with comfortable ease. A few carefully chosen accessories impart an exotic air to the room.

Map out all entry points and exits in the room and the position of windows, protruding structural columns etc. This gives you an inkling of where furniture can be fitted in, or where you would like to have people sit keeping in mind the view of the garden, the bedroom, kitchen or toilet (visual privacy). The golden rule of circulation is that it should be short, direct and unhindered as far as possible.

The position of the windows, doors etc. are very relevant to planning living areas. Apart from being sources for light and ventilation, they can offer picturesque views. The days of the TV as a status symbol are long past. So keep your TV out of the living room, in a bedroom or a separate TV room. A TV is an entity that demands attention; it is the No 1 killer of conversation in the world!

Areas in the room can be highlighted with the use of lamps, vases, art objects or plants. When choosing colours, use upholstery in a lighter shade than the walls. This has a soothing effect on the user. Contrasting colours can be loud and a source of distraction.

Some general tips about colour and space:
- Colours appear more intense in large areas than in smaller ones.
- Light-coloured floors show wear and tear less than darker ones.
- A low ceiling can give a feeling of intimacy (but too low can be claustrophobic.)

Furniture Maintenance
The guidelines for furniture maintenance are pretty simple. If the furniture is used wisely and handled carefully, it will need very little in the way of routine maintenance. But in cleaning and polishing furniture surfaces and hardware, and in re-upholstering, some well-intentioned caretakers introduce damage. In fact, a lot of what furniture conservators do is respond to destructive maintenance practices.

Cleaning Surfaces
For the most part, maintaining furniture simply means keeping it clean, carefully. Wood furniture usually needs to be cleaned only when there is a buildup of wax or dirt. Only unfinished wood, painted wood, or wood with a sturdy finish should be cleaned. The finish on giltwood is often applied with a water-soluble size, or adhesive; it should be carefully dusted, not cleaned, or cleaned only by a professional.

Before cleaning wood or coatings, the first and most important step is to evaluate the surface and make sure that the surface or coating is stable and not apt to be damaged by the contact required in cleaning and polishing. If the surface is unstable, the polishing could knock off loose portions. Damaged surfaces should be referred to a conservator.

After the soundness of the surface has been established, the next step is to find out what the dirt is and what the surface is. If you can't determine these exactly, find out what removes the dirt without affecting the surface underneath it. Often, dust can be removed with the careful wipe of a damp cloth. Oily dirt or waxy residue can be removed with a mild detergent and water solution or with mineral spirits. However, it is vital to make sure that the cleaning solution does not affect the underlying surface. Even when you determine a cleaning method that works successfully, proceed cautiously.

Loose dust on the surface can be removed with a soft, lint-free cloth, gently rubbed over the surface. Dust is an abrasive and can scratch the surface, so be careful. Uneven areas can be dusted with a clean, natural bristle paint or artist's brush. Again, do not try to dust a surface that is severely deteriorated. Cloth fibers can catch and tear away pieces of the finish, veneer or loose parts. Even rough edges can splinter. Carving, fretwork, and other delicate work can be dusted with a soft bristle brush, with a vacuum cleaner host held close enough to take in the dust one it is dislodged by the brush. Do not use feather dusters, as they can scratch and pull off loose fragments of veneer.

Surfaces in good condition but with a heavy accumulation of dust can be cleaned very carefully with a vacuum cleaner. Use the lowest suction available and the round brush attachment. Don't let the metal or hard plastic parts of the vacuum bump into the surfaces; they can scratch the finish or wood. Much damage, in fact, occurs as the feet and bases of pieces are hit with the vacuum cleaner.

Dirt that cannot be simply vacuumed off may be removed with cleaners mixed in a dilute solution, but only if the finish is in good solid condition. First, determine which solvent removes the dirt without removing the finish. Those to be tested include mineral spirits (white spirit), paint thinner, and naphtha. Second, test a small spot in an obscure area with the solution on a cotton swab. All areas that appear to be a different coating or material must be tested separately. Only if the solution does not damage the test area should it be used to clean the rest of the piece.

For finished wood, dampen a cotton cloth with the solvent or cleaning solution, and gently rub over a small area at a time. Avoid using too much liquid, as they can cause damage. Then, wipe the cleaned surface with a clean dampened cloth to remove any cleanser residues, followed by a dry soft cloth.

Following simple cleaning, further protection and aesthetic enhancement can be obtained through the application of a stable, hard furniture polish, such as a hard paste wax. The hard wax surface can be dusted more easily because it will be more smooth, and the dust will not be imbedded in it as it would in an unwaxed surface. Waxing need only occur infrequently because the wax itself is not readily removed and it does not degrade chemically. Waxing too often can result in a built-up, clouded surface.

This simple approach avoids the problems created by popular methods of "furniture polishing" - such as sprays and oily polishes - that may result in cumulative damage to furniture. Many polishes and residues continue to be a vexing problem for furniture conservators, as they can build up over time and with numerous applications, trapping and adhering airborne dirt onto the surface.

Cleaning Upholstery
Dusting upholstery can be accomplished by a vacuum cleaner. Place a soft screen on the surface to prevent any snagging or abrasion from the vacuum tip, and using a brush attachment, carefully vacuum the surface.

Stains and other damage to upholstery should be referred to an upholstery or textile conservator for further treatment.

Metal Hardware
One never-ending concern of furniture caretakers is for the hardware, including handles, brackets, hinges and escutcheons attached, usually with nails, to the outer surface of a piece. The metal in hardware might be brass, silver, gold-plated bronze, depending upon the style, date and country of origin. Contemporary hardware attachments sometimes have a clear lacquer finish that gives them a shiny appearance. Antique hardware is also sometimes coated by restorers and conservators to eliminate the need for constant polishing. There is currently a lot of debate in the conservation field as to whether metal hardware should be lacquered or polished. Neither is an option is there is evidence of an original varnish or if abrasive polishing would remove some other original surface treatment.

Furniture hardware may become dirty and tarnished with use and exposure to the atmosphere. In such cases, polishing it can be justified. However, even this step is sometimes a poorly informed one. One common example of the damage is created by polishing hardware supposed to be brass, when it is really gilded bronze that is simply dirty. Polishing removes the gold, damaging the surface of a beautiful sculptural element.

If you choose to polish, remove the hardware from the piece, noting the exact location of each screw and nut. Polishing the hardware while on the piece damages the surrounding finish and also allows polishes to run beneath the hardware that can further damage both the metal hardware and the finish.

Clean hardware carefully with a 50/50 mix of acetone and alcohol to remove any dirt and oil residue, scrubbing the piece with a soft bristle brush. After drying, the surface can be polished with a fine, lint-free cloth of felt block charged with a very fine abrasive, such as calcium carbonate or jeweler's micro polish, in an alcohol or mineral spirits slurry. Commercial polishes can contribute to the deterioration of the hardware, as they frequently contain harsh cleaners that corrode the metal.

If the hardware cannot be removed safely from the furniture it can be polished and coated on the object provided the following precautions are scrupulously followed. First, the surface of the wood and varnish must be completely protected. Acetate sheets, such as those found in office supply stores, can be notched and slid under the hardware from both sides to form an overlapping barrier. Without this precaution, attempts to polish the hardware will likely end in disaster.

Since this hardware cannot be doused with the acetone and alcohol mixture, cleaning must be done by dipping swabs in the solution, then rubbing the metal surface with the swab. Polishing must also be done more carefully, perhaps on a smaller scale.

After polishing, remove all residues. The surface of the hardware that has been removed from the furniture can be easily coated with a transparent resin before the hardware is replaced on the piece. Particular care must be used in applying any coating when the hardware cannot be removed, to make sure that no protective varnish for the hardware gets on the furniture piece itself.
